June 26th: Uncle Daddy and the Kissin' Cousins
It
was a warm August night in Georgia. The Hickey family was wrapping up
their daily chores as the sun was making its final dip into the
horizon. They laid down their yard tools and dustpans so they could
pass around the jug as night fell. Uncle Daddy was humming to himself
while whittling on a piece of wood. "Mountain" Dewey Hickey started
blowing on the jug after every time it passed around the group. Being
the most hard working of the bunch, Lil' Red was still scrubbing
trousers on her washboard. Ichabod Hickey started noticing the rhythm
that Lil' Red, Uncle Daddy, and Dew were unintentionally creating. He
started tapping his foot and plucking at the teeth of his rake to the
rough tune. Brother Dickie joined in by clacking some spoons together
and cousin Malachai started bending his saw till it howled. At that
moment, the Hickey family band, Uncle Daddy and the Kissin Cousins, was
born. The Hickeys were not dissuaded into thinking that their melodious
beginning was a delusion brought on by consuming home-distilled
spirits. They sold their best heifer and bought a mess of instruments
to accompany their homemade sound. Uncle Daddy and the Kissin' Cousins Myspace Page
